Some products are born to stay in their lane. Our Succulent Decor Pillows? Absolutely not.
What started in 2017 as a whimsical handmade nursery accent, something dreamy to tuck into a crib corner or style on a rattan armchair, slowly, quietly, and unstoppably became something much bigger. Literally.
A Small Decor Pillow With a Big Origin Story
When Boho Baby Heaven introduced the Standard Size Succulent Decor Pillow in 2017 on Instagram, sculptural succulent pillows were genuinely new territory in handmade decor.
We were among the very first, if not the first, to bring nature inspired, 3D succulent designs into boho nursery styling. The STANDARD SIZE was approximately 38 x 38 cm (15 x 15 inches).
Our design also got a few of the biggest Etsy honors:
- a feature post on their main Instagram feed in 2018 when Etsy had 1.7 million followers.
- the Play Gym Toy Version was recommended by Etsy's marketing team to be entered into their Etsy Design Awards contest in 2023. The Etsy Design Awards is an annual global awards program that honors talented sellers, celebrating their work, creativity, and craft.
The Succulent quickly became one of our signature designs and later inspired a growing family of original cactus themed pillows, all handcrafted from our own templates.
During the Pandemic, Something Shifted
Then came the pandemic. Nursery decor orders were coming in, but so did something else. Customers began sending us photos of their succulent pillows in their reviews styled on sofas, armchairs, beds, and in living rooms layered with larger throw cushions with absolutely zero baby in sight.
Why Velvet Changed Absolutely Everything
Our original cotton versions are timeless and cozy. Soft, beautiful, and perfect for a nursery. But velvet? Velvet walked in and completely stole the show.

The moment we created our first velvet succulent pillow, something clicked. The fabric catches light differently throughout the day, giving each petal more depth, shadow, and dimension.

Velvet also unlocked richer color stories including warm rust tones, golden yellow, soft pearl neutrals, sandy beige shades, rich coffee brown, calming jade green, dreamy lilac, and coastal inspired blues like sky, ocean, aqua, and teal.

Suddenly our succulent pillow wasn't just at home in a soft pastel nursery. It belonged in a moody living room, a styled bedroom, or a curated boho corner. Anywhere someone wanted to add something unexpected and beautiful.
Designed For Decorative Purposes
Of course, sculptural decor comes with its own little realities.
Our pillows are designed primarily for decorative purposes and are carefully stuffed. They are not intended to be used as regular sleeping or lounging pillows. Because of their delicate sculptural construction and special stitching, excessive pressure, laying, or jumping on them may loosen seams over time.
In other words, they love being admired more than being wrestled with.
The more customers styled them throughout their homes, the more people began seeing them less as nursery accents and more as statement decor pieces.
The People Have Spoken: Make It Bigger
As more customers moved their succulent pillows from nurseries into larger living spaces, the requests started rolling in. Bigger. Bolder. More statement making. People wanted a size that could hold its own on a deep sofa or a king sized bed without getting lost among the cushions.
A Tiny Reality Check From Our Packing Table
Now, before anyone asks us to make a human sized succulent pillow, let's talk logistics for a second.
Designing handmade decor is always a balancing act between creativity, practicality, and what the postal system will allow us to get away with.
We don't have giant warehouses, or unlimited free shipping budgets.
Succulents are deceptively demanding little creatures. The bigger the pillow gets, the more filling it needs, and the bigger the shipping box becomes. Sometimes adding just a few extra centimeters can dramatically increase shipping costs.
So while we'd all love to create gigantic cloud like succulent pillows large enough to disappear into, real world shipping limits do exist.
Our LARGE SIZE ultimately settled at approximately 49 × 49 cm (19.2 × 19.2 inches), the largest size we could create while still fitting our biggest international shipping box.

Still, every size we create is thoughtfully designed to balance sculptural beauty, comfort, practicality, and the realities of handmade international shipping.
Over the years, our designs have inspired countless imitations, but there's truly nothing like the original. When you bring one of our velvet succulent pillows into your home, you're not buying something off a factory line. You're holding something that someone made with their hands, from scratch, for you.
And once it arrives, the fun part begins: styling it.
How To Style Your Velvet Succulent Pillow
The beauty of our succulent pillows is that they don't follow rules, but here's how our community loves to style them.
- Layer them up: Place your succulent pillow in front of larger foundational cushions for that collected, effortless boho look. The sculptural shape loves a backdrop.
- Let it be the star: On a simple linen sofa or a neutral bed, a single velvet succulent pillow becomes an instant focal point. No further decoration required.
- Mix sizes: Our original and larger sizes look incredible together. Different heights, same sculptural energy. It's a vibe.
- Don't overthink it: Boho decor is supposed to feel collected, not curated. Put it somewhere that makes you smile every time you walk past it. That's the whole point.
