Safety Guide: 10 Tips for Hanging and Positioning Nursery Mobiles

Safety Guide: 10 Tips for Hanging and Positioning Nursery Mobiles

Safety is at the heart of everything we create at Boho Baby Heaven. Our mobiles are designed as decorative heirloom pieces, not toys.

They’re lightweight and handmade with care, but like all hanging decor in a nursery, they should always be used thoughtfully. While they bring beauty and symbolism to your baby’s room, they also support gentle developmental benefits when enjoyed safely.

Here’s our expert guide to keeping your little one safe while cherishing the heartfelt beauty of their mobile:

1. Choose a Mobile With Sturdy Construction

  • Always select a well-made, lightweight mobile crafted from durable materials that won’t break or fall apart with gentle movement.
  • Many mobiles on the market hang quite literally by a thread, while Boho Baby Heaven mobiles are designed with strong macramé rope for secure hanging and long-lasting use.

2. Install It Securely

  • Ensure the mobile is securely installed out of your baby’s reach, using a sturdy ceiling hook, wooden arm, or wall attachment.
  • Most of our handmade mobiles weigh around 400 grams (≈14 oz), so always choose hardware or props (like canopy arms or mobile holders) that can safely support this weight.
  • Follow the manufacturer’s guide carefully and double-check that everything is firmly fixed before use.

3. Choose the Right Spot

  • The crib is a classic choice, but it’s not your only option.
  • Many parents also hang mobiles above a changing table or a reading corner.
  • Wherever you decide, make sure the installation is secure and well out of your baby’s reach.

4. Place It Out of Reach

  • Mobiles are meant to be admired from a distance.
  • Always hang your mobile high enough that your baby cannot touch or pull on it.
  • A safe mobile is one that your baby enjoys visually, not physically.

5. Avoid Overhead or Nearby Hazards

  • Ensure there are no overhead hazards near the mobile.
  • Common risks include ceiling fans, light fixtures, shelves, air vents, hanging plants, wall art, smoke detectors, or any other objects that could become dangerous if the mobile were to fall.
  • If there are shelves or wall art nearby, make sure they are firmly secured and positioned so nothing can loosen, slip, or fall into the crib or nappy changing area.
  • Please note: stylings sometimes show products in close proximity to maximize product features and capture close-up details, but in reality, always keep a safe distance to maintain a safe environment for your baby.

6. Keep Away From Heat or Flames

  • Like any fabric-based decor, mobiles should always be placed away from open flames, heaters, or other heat sources.
  • Safety and peace of mind come first.

7. Remove or Reposition Around 5 Months

  • Babies grow quickly, and before you know it, they’ll start pulling themselves up.
  • Around 5 months of age, it’s important to either remove the mobile or reposition it higher in the room to keep it out of reach.
  • This simple step prevents curious hands from grabbing strings or shapes.

8. Keep It Decorative, Not Playable

  • Our mobiles are crafted to be lightweight decorative items.
  • While they’re soft and handmade, the strings may pose a choking hazard if pulled on.
  • For this reason, mobiles should never be used as toys or placed where your baby can directly interact with them.

9. Check for Signs of Wear or Loose Parts Regularly

  • Even the highest-quality handmade items deserve a little check-up now and then!
  • Regularly inspect your mobile for loose parts, frayed strings, or any damage that could pose a choking or entanglement risk.
  • If something doesn’t look quite right, repair it promptly or remove the mobile until it can be fixed.

10. If Hung Under a Canopy

  • Make sure the canopy is securely drilled into the wall or ceiling, never attached with adhesive hooks only.
  • Make sure the mobile is still placed securely and out of reach.
  • Always double-check that no part of the canopy or mobile could fall into the crib or within baby’s reach.
